Something I have always wanted to do is a bit of wood carving. After investigating the process and getting some carving knives and honing kit I was up for the challenge. It is still a work in progress as I am taking my time and posting progress on a carving forum and have received sound advise from some very skilled carvers. Lets go the pictures... This first one shows the knives I bought after I had spent some time with a strip of leather and some honing paste. They are sharp! The wood of choice is Cedar..only because I have a bit in stock that was sized ok for the job.. Templates were sized using my scanner and printed. These prints then glued to some card and cut to shape. First cuts made using coping saw Second and third cuts made and now ready for the knives. After the first session carving it begins to take shape. (can you tell what it is yet) After another two sessions I have now got to this stage and some of the curves are beginning to develop Further progress reports as and when. robert

I want one ... I want one ...
I have a set of wood-carving tools a boss gave me when I worked for Rank Xerox in the early 80s as I wanted to carve a totem pole ... that never happened but I still have the tools! At a guess, I would say yours are sharper than mine .....

Alfie This is the USA forum I have joined for all things carving. www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/A very friendly and informative group of like minded carvers. Theres a lot of skill and experiance here and Its good to see they have taken me on board. It appears that carving in the states is far more popular then in this country.

I'm just now catching up everywhere and, like the others, I find the cats great, Robert. The cats might be of the same shape, but all will look different because of the wonderful wood grain. A family of Meerkats - that would make a really lovely set. Hope you have been talked into it.

"The cat" is finished. After several hours of sanding and profiling ending with 600 wet n dry, three coats of sanding sealer with a rubdown with 0000 wirewool in between coats and a final finish of good old wax polish this is how it looks. Roberts first carving is complete and awaiting your comments guys. robert
