No, Alfie, it is not a type of abacus. PV was just here and guessed it within 5 minutes. ;D ;D ;D - but, he did know that it was downstairs and not in the livingroom, diningroom or office. With that bit of info and DAG's hints, he went off again and came back with the correct answer right away. So, perhaps that will help someone to guess it now.

OK, another clue then.......think in general terms, what would metal most likely be used for?

A heavy duty door bolt (possibly photographed sideways).

Metal Dag...well machines I guess, depends what metal. I known there are differences between alloys and what I assume to be metal but is actually not classed as metal. So...what metal are we talking here? I would think metal containers - metal clothes hangers

You know what...I am forgetting if it is small or large. It looks like the underside of a sofa or chair. At the very least the tubular's look like supports of some kind. I wonder where they run to, which makes me think chair/sofa

Okay have realized its smaller than the picture - not in the living room etc. More thinking. There is something familiar about it though

Hi Jen, keep at it, you are right in saying there is something familiar as it is exactly how you would see it, it is not hidden at all, in fact it is meant to be seen! So that is a no to all of them so far!

Part of the workings of an old music box ... the type that when you opened them you could see the mechanism that made the music.

OK ... is it part of a decorative box that has some sort of old technology that was used for entertainment?
