This is a Peninsula Mole Skink. Found it in the filter system of the kids pool here in Bradenton on Sunday. It wasn't feeling too well after being in the treated water for a while. Youngest grandson then put it in a bottle of fresh water and it perked up after a while. We then took it and let it loose near a pond on our way home. He rescued it out of the filter and put it in a bucket of pool water first. The skink often played dead now and then. www.wildflorida.com/wildlife/lizards/Mole_Skink.php

Never seen one of those, so I suppose they don't grow larger than about 6 inches long overall?

It's the first skink I've ever seen too. Well done Colin for saving him.

I'd never seen one live before, either, had only read about them a couple of times. I'll confess, this critter gave me a dreadful fright. The kids said that a snake with legs was in the filter, and when we looked, we thought it was a lizard as we could only see the body with the legs. I knelt down and reached into the filter and had it in my hand when it shot off like greased lightning. I fell back and dropped it back in. I thought "the kids are right - a snake with legs" After that, I didn't fancy catching it again, nobody did. In the end, Colin did, bless him. I know now that they are harmless, but to pick up a "lizard" and then discover it had this looooong tail, like a snake. Shudders!
