Cook rhubarb slowly with:
ginger lemon juice brown sugar a few prunes a dash of cayenne pepper

PS. She claims that she made it for herself once home (after an operation) and then made a load for the rest of the ward and took it in as requested.

I use lots of ginger and lemon juice when I cook rhubarb, usually use white sugar but have used brown now and then. Have never put prunes or cayenne pepper in so I do know now that I have not inadvertently been making a laxative.
