Once again I was challenged.. The brassy aircraft to the left was made from an old penny by a friend for me. He bent it and cut it but his lack of mobility prevented him from polishing it. It has a pin attached to underside for the lapel So. He reckons I should make one as well. He bent it for me and today I did the cutting and first polish. Just a little more to do.

Well, that is something new and different AND fiddly! I can't really imagine how that is done, so perhaps you would show us please, Robert. They really make lovely presents. Well done, also your friend.

Ok. I shall make up a carboard pennyand show the process later in the day. At the moment I am thinking of a day out today...where to go? West to the coast is not the best weather today. Maybe west...towards the Dales..

Yet another going out for the day, where did you go in the end, Robert? Hope you had a good day, too. Good morning kedi and Victoria, looks like we are all going out today. Kedi, enjoy your evening out, Victoria, enjoy your lunch with English friends, Arney and I are off to a local Inn for lunch to celebrate our youngest Grandson's 15th birthday with the family. The weather has changed and not looking good right now!

Evening all. Yes, we made it out and ended up at the Yorkshire Water reservior at Grimwith, when I have finished with penny plane I shall process a few pictures. I have now got some pictures for the making of the penny planes You have to use your imagination and pretend this piece of cardboard is an old penny ! Picture one is your chosen penny.. Picture two shows the first fold. In half. Ensure the fold is really tight This shows the second fold and once again it has to really tight. A metal jawed vice and hammer are required. Now you can see how we are going to turn this penny into a wee aircraft. I have roughly mark it up for cutting. Coping saw is used to cut out the unwanted pieces Be careful not to cut to much away from the folds or you will end up with two pieces! This scribble may help. Now its all down to filing and polishing. If its for a lapel badge you will need a small brass safety pin. (Not a shiny chrome one) This is soldered on the base of the plane, Job sorted. You can also make up a small wire stand to show it off as well. Good luck Robert

Thanks for that Robert, very interesting, but I would have thought that the penny would need annealing first so that it don't crack when you try to get a tight bend on it? Perhaps as it is not pure copper it don't need it.

Thanks for going to the trouble to show us, Robert. You make it sound quite easy but I'm sure it isn't.
One more question - do you clamp it in a mini vice when you polish it, and do you do this by hand or do you use a small polishing tool?

OK.. to finish I first use wet, wet n dry. Then a combination of hand polishing and using a small dremel tool with buffing attachment and polishing paste. To help I use my plastic jawed vice but most of it is hand held.
