OK .... looking at the separation between the clear plastic and the upper red plastic I going to take a guess that there is some sort of pumping action involved.

No pumping action involved Jeanne, sorry!

Must it be attached to something else to work?

No it is complete as you see it, does not require anything attached.

Is that a dividing part that I can see in the clear bit? Some sort of paddle for whipping or mixing something?

A garlic press of sorts ... knob to press down on top and solid bottom to capture the juices from mashed garlic. I had my husband sitting at the computer last night ... putting his thinking cap on...

No to both of those really, but Jeanne you are very close! The bottom is a separate compartment which has nothing to do with the top.

"The bottom is a separate compartment which has nothing to do with the top."
........ so do you mean that the bottom part, the clear plastic, is only a "holder" for the top part and the top part (red) can be removed and used separately from the bottom.

No! ;D
There is a storage area in the bottom just in case you want to store the ............that are going in the top.
The top consists of the red 'lid' for want of a better term, and a clear plastic chamber which is separate from the bottom.

Is this used for pressing something down into the bottom clear clamber with your thumb? Whatever is going in does it have to pass through something at the bottom of the red lid before entering the clear plastic chamber?
