After my first attempt to grow outdoor cucumbers last year turned out to be a total failure. This year I decided to try a couple in the consevatory. Two plants in large pots first filled with general purpose compost. A layer of dry food was installed while planting. I have two types I have arranged a support structure so the plants have to be tied in to grow in a spriral up the frame. This way I reckon I shall get several feet of growth before the support runs out. On a really warm day I may water them 3 to 4 times and I nearly always mist them when I`m passing to keep the humidity up. They are fed regular with tomato feed. I have blinds that stop any direct sun falling on the plants so they seem to thrive when the temperature is close to 30C ! This picture of the first of the crop and looking promising. So far I have only had to remove one male flower. Leaves look healthy Flowers are looking amazing

They do look healthy Robert, I remember growing cucumbers about 5 years ago and as you say you have to water them many times a day and keep misting them but even then the leaves got dry and brown at times. But where I was growing them it was too difficult to fix up blinds and I have not bothered since. Not ideal to grow them in my greenhouse as I have tomatoes in there that would hate the damp atmosphere. Well done Robert, keep us posted!

Well done Robert. On Saturday some friends popped by (before we even got up) and brought a load of goodies from the garden (onions, baby leeks) along with 4 freshly laid eggs and a jar of apple/loquat chutney (along with a chilli plant, creeping rosemary and mini geranium) but also a cucumber about the size of the one you are displaying. Now Portuguese cucumbers are small in comparison to the Dutch variety and tend to be bitter so I haven't actually tried it yet.
Hopefully yours is sweet.

Very well done, Robert! Peter did try growing both cucumbers and tomatoes in our Wintergarten many years ago and it was a complete flop due to white fly. The place was swarming with them and we had to throw everything out in the end and hang yellow sticky tabs up. Never bothered since but after seeing yours, perhaps another trial, this time outside, might produce.

We grow cucmbers outside in the regular garden every year. This year we tried a variety of bush cucumber and we are really liking it. They are producing quite nicely.

That sounds interesting Audra, would like to see a picture of cucumbers growing outside, yes your higher humidity would suit them well.
