Oh what a lovely a photo! My middle son LOVES this. He is my bug boy.
Oh and it is a Praying Mantis and they are an excellent bug to have in your garden. They eat all kinds of distructive bugs.

Just out of interest here is a link to an old thread about praying mantis: naturalworld.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=insects&action=display&thread=2367&page=1I don't know if you have found it yet but an easy way to navigate round this forum is to go down to the History section (bottom left on the home page) and click a date and you will see only the clickable images that were on the home page at that time enabling you to find something visibly rather than looking through loads of links. Again clicking on the images will take you to the relevant thread. The home page images are renewed at least every 2 months and kept in the History section for reference.

Easytiger, the second one looks like a regular grasshopper to me. Something my kids would snatch up and feed to the chickens. It is a great close up though.
