Arney asked if I could shorten a pair of knitting needles that she is currently using. The easiest way would have been to simply cut the end off and turn another tapered point the same. But thinking about that the finish would be very different to the glass like finish on the existing taper and may get caught on the wool. So I decided to do it the hard way. Cut the end off to the length indicated and place the piece with the head still on in the lathe chuck with the head sticking out. Drill and ream a hole right through the head and into the shaft beyond, in this case 5mm dia. Part off the head completely and discard the rest of the shaft. Go back to the other piece with the taper and face up cut end and turn down a spigot to suit the head to a diameter that would make the head a press fit. Job done! That was a clever idea, well done, DAG! It's nice that you have such a good workshop with all of the necessary tools to be able to do such finicky jobs.
