just coming into flower now is Feijoa sellowiana, the pineapple guava. I just grow it for the flowers mainly but the fruit is edible, although it only ripens in hot summers, fingers crossed. And this is grown from a seed that Victoria sent me, a very nice Canna

The blooms in the second photo are so lovely, so fairy-like. DAG, this is where you'd see fairies, too. Pete, I think I saw these blooms in the Tampa Zoo a year ago and they seem to love it in your garden judging how well they are doing and blooming. Fingers crossed that you get the fruit to ripen. Re the Jatropha on the previous page, I think the kids have one in their garden in Florida, but a shrub and with different leaves. I have a pic somewhere. It has lovely little red flowers and, if I remember correctly, sort of lilac-type leaves. I just looked at the link you gave and the flowers are the same. I've noticed that ants like to go in the flowers, do they in yours?

I think Jatropha is widely grown in suitable climates and also I think there are better looking ones than the type I have.
It does have red flowers and it has set seed, in fact the one in the picture is a seedling from another plant I have.
I've not let the ants have a look in really as it stays under glass, but I bet they are after the nectar.

One more picture of the bop before it starts to fade. And Caesalpinia gilliesii, also some times called "bird of paradise"

I love the effect of the Caesalpinia gilliesii against the building pete, and I assume that the fern like leaves are part of the same plant?
How old is it to get to that stage and how high does it grow?

Thankyou Dag.
Yes the ferny leaves are from that plant.
Its probably been there the best part 20yrs, and flowering for more than 10.
It hates rain so I'm keeping my fingers crossed, prolonged wet weather make the flowers rot.
It about 12ft up the wall, but its not the tidiest of plants I must admit.

Lovely, Pete, and the Caesalpinia gilliesii is stunning, so dainty and elegant and the colour combination is marvellous, eye-catching! You must put a lot of work into your garden as you seem to have so many exotics growing there, and all looking like they belong there naturally. Well done.

Is that one of the Brazilian pepper trees, Pete? The ones that some people complain about being invasive but are so beautiful when they bloom?
We saw them in Cyprus and they are just lovely. I think I put a pic up somewhere that was ID'd.

I'm not sure if its the same, I have seen this referred to as Califoria Pepper tree, but I know it does not originate there. Its Schinus molle, I think Brazilian pepper might be Schinus terebinthifolius. I know the Latin names are awkward and I really struggle to spell them, but common names seem to cause allot of confusion, so if I can I like to use both, but forgot on this occasion

Well, those Flamboyant seeds didn't loose any time sprouting! The Mexican Petunias look good, nice and green, so perhaps you'll get blooms this year after all. Fingers crossed.
