Well as a complete guess I'd like to put Oyster Mushroom out there (Pleurotus ostreatus) I believe that this would be a good time to mention that I only own one fungi book and I've rarely ever touched it xD but just going by the fact that they look like oyster mushrooms and I know for fact that they do like beech =]

Now that you have ID'd them, aesculus, I'll say that they do look like the ones you can buy in the shops here. I didn't want Robert to decide to taste them, just in case they weren't what I thought.

Sounds like sound advice =] even if I'd postivley ID'd any plant I wouldnt want to eat it unless 1) I've grown it 2) Someone in the know has also told me what it is as well =]

There is a method of testing to see if any substance is harmful and requires no equipment and our earliest ancestors must have used it or we wouldn't be here now! ;D

I think beech logs/trees must be the most susceptible timber for fungi, if the local council around here keeps cutting them down at the rate they are now there will be none left. One mushroom and out comes the chainsaw.
Health and safety has a lot to answer for.

I just now see that I never answered you, DAG. Is it to invite someone (you don't like ;D) over for a meal and see what happens?? If yes, then I could think of a few people I could invite. ;D ;D
Nice group pic, Robert.
I don't think they are that bad over here, Pete.
I must say, I love to see toadstools and mushrooms, makes no difference if they are single ones or groups. There is something so interesting about them and a bit mystical, too.
