Yes, that is the vine that John & Judith had which overtook one side of their villa. I think they are wonderful if you have the space, especially since they are everygreen and so rampant.
However, don't know if I am correct or not, but my 'five language' book on Flowers of Madeira and Portugal list is as the Solandra nitida, syn S guttata D Don ex Lindl ... I have not confirmed this on the net with your S maxima.
Lovely photographs. You don't realise how huge these flowers are until you actually see them, do you?
