Gumbo Limbo - Bursera simaruba Also called West Indian Birch or Gum Elemi. Gumbo Limbo means incense tree. We visited the De Soto National Memorial here in Bradenton this afternoon and saw a grove of these amazing trees. I asked the wardens about them and they told me that this one, the biggest of them all, was about 80 years old. So they grow very quickly to reach this stately size in so short a time.

Lovely photos Kedi and a very interesting link, these trees certainly seem to have quite a lot of uses.
Thanks for sharing.

We went down to the De Soto Monument again yesterday (to get the flower seeds) and saw that these marvellous trees were sprouting both leaves and flower buds. I couldn't get high enough to photograph the buds but here is one of the young leaves -

At the rate things grow here, I am sure I can, Alfie. This goes for both plants and weeds. ;D

The flowers were over when I went back to see these trees the other day, Alfie, but the ranger told me that they were small, creamy and not much to look at. Here is a pic of the berries at least - Another view of the trunk and branches -

Thanks, and yes, it is.
I did manage to get one seed which I still have to plant. What a pity none of us will be around to see it in 80 years. ;D

Great picture and very interesting tree Kedi ... I enjoyed the link too.
I've never seen anything like it here on the west coast, probably the weather is not quite right for it further west. It would be a wonderful tree to climb as a kid ... or as an adult.
