I found these two newts in the garden yesteday when I was moving rocks dismantling our rockery. The big one was sleepy as it didn't move much, but the little one was lively and it was hard to get a picture of it. As you see, it had run out of the view finder before I managed to get a pic of them both. I managed to catch it here though -

They really did have this purply-blue colour, DAG. I made no alteration on these pics, so I am especially glad that they turned out true.

While having another go at dismantling the rockery two days ago, I found this large newt. I carefully carried him to where we had been putting the stones for the timebeing. Yesterday, I made a refuge in another part of the garden, sort of behind the pond, and found him still where I had put him the day before. So he was moved into his new home.

Kedi I find it amazing that you will not touch ordinary garden worms but don't mind handling a newt..........not sure I fancy picking one of those up but I don't know why! ;D

This couple of common newts were spotted in early December at night disputing the ownership of a worm,I have lots of them in my garden but was amazed at them being around in December I thought they would be well hibernated by then. I want a piece of the action The tug of war begins I won

Well caught TL, It's years since I spotted any here, I would also have thought they would have been in hibernation by that time of year. Alfie

When I was a kid, the lad next door, my brother & I used to go 'Newting' as such, then sell them on at 1d, 2d, or 3d, depending on size, yet keeping them in a bucket on the floor, in the lad next door's kitchen of all places. One day, a frog jumped out, a tea-towel on top of the cooker fell down and caught fire, so we had to dispose of the newts when we next went to the pond.

Great shots, TL, in spite of the horrid worm, shudders........
I would have thought that the newts were in hibernation, too, have never seen any in our garden at this time of the year. After such a meal, I bet they don't need anything else to eat until the spring.
How did you improve your pocket money after that, mikkel?

Our newts are coming out of hibernation and we are finding lots of them both in the pond and on land. Found these 4 when we were moving stones when redoing one of the flower beds. They were still asleep when I picked the stone up, so I carefully put them on another stone at the ponds edge and covered them with some dried leaves so that the birds didn't make a meal of them. I kept checking back and, one by one, they had woken up enough to move to a safe place by themselves.
