This thread is only for mailboxes found in Britian and I hope that everyone will join in. Any kind of postbox can be shown, be it the upright round ones, or the box type on poles, the ones set into brick walls or the out-of-the-ordinary ones. Also, please look out for ones from the reigns of different monachs. I only managed to get some "GR" and "ER" ones, although I did see one (built into an old stone wall) with "VR" on it, I think a fairly rare find nowadays. Unfortunately, we couldn't stop on the narrow windy road out in the countryside in Cornwall as there was traffic right behind us and nowhere to pull into. Hopefully, some other member(s) will get lucky and find one for this new collection. Have fun! I found this one in the airport at Stansted. It looks normal from the front - - but look at the side of it - An old "GR" one painted black in Land's End. Does anyone have any idea why it was painted black, was this modern at one point or was it done after George died? This one was seen in Lelant, St Ives - This one was down near the harbour in St Ives - - and this one in a Tesco supermarket in St Ives -

Kedi, I trust that you got Peter's approval for that photograph? ;D Here is my nearest postbox, as the crow flies:

Of course, DAG, it was his idea to show a triple postbox. ;D honest!
I haven't asked my cousin yet, but I am sure he won't mind. You can see him in profile to the right of Peter.
Glad you got one of those postboxes, DAG, as that is what I thought I had but can't find.

Great going, Mikkel, it is one from Victorian days. The first one that we have here. It~s strange that is appears to be between two house doors and it even has a light above it. I knew that we~d get a collection of different ones from Britain - it is not just America with a varied selection.

I will check again this week as to whether or not it IS still in use, but I know it was a couple of weeks back. I feel it must be, otherwise there would be a plate across the opening.

A good one, Linda. It is an older one, too, as it is from George's Reign. It does make you wonder though, way out in the boondocks like that. I bet it is the only one for miles and miles around, and the sheep make more use of it than the people do. ;D

Nice that you have brought this thread back up, Linda. Perhaps some of our newer members will look out for postboxes, too.
This is another one from the reign of George. There seem to be quite a lot of them still around.
Going back over this thread, I see that some open to the left and others to the right. I wonder if there is a reason for this? And it has nothing to do with whoevers reign it was in.

I should think that it all depends on where the postbox is sited, if that one above opened the other way the door would stick out over the curb and could be a danger?
