I just love your Hawthorn Shield Bug, Alfie! He's a real beauty and that's a great pic of him - you can see all the little black spots and the pattern on the reddish part.
I've never found such a pretty one over here. Only he plain green ones or sometimes green with a black tail end.

Oh dear, I didn't have my tapemeasure with me, DAG, but I think it was about 3 cm / 1.2 inches. A good sized one at any rate. ;D Here is one of my favourites as I had never seen one before, just heard the name but never associated them. Strongy ID'd it for me. Katydid - This is the same one, up in the corner of a shop window (I climbed up on the windowsill to get the pics) and reflected. I think it looks like it has a little monkey face. It looked rather like a leaf and a hollow body, very odd-looking. Once I knew the name, I found this very interesting link in Wikipedia.
