While on holiday in Portugal recently, we found countless giant jellyfish washed up on the beach and in the shallows. Perhaps it had something to do with the full moon and/or very low tide, both occuring over several days. These jellyfish were HUGE, the biggest that I found being a good 60 cm across, not counting the 8cm frill! Some of them were very light in colour, others quite dark. Most of them had a "cross" on the top. Here is one with the underside uppermost and my foot as a comparison to show the size of these monsters - A close-up of the underside, showing air bubbles in the veins - Here is another one on its back and you can see the innards fairly clearly -

Wow.... wow... thanks for adding your foot... it really put the size into perspective.
What fantastic creatures! Kedi ... these are amazing pictures. I don't think I've every had the opportunity to observe a Jellyfish so closely. I don't know a thing about jellyfish, so I'm wondering are they all this whitish color or did you see others of different color?

Absolutely fascinating kedi and thanks for that, I have seen a few small jelly fish washed up when the tide went out but nothing that size! Would hate to meet them in the water while swimming! Great shots, well done!

Thanks DAG. I've never seen any jellyfish like this before either, quite frightening. That's why I didn't go swimming, was afraid that I might collide with such a monster

Great pics Kedi, we sometimes get small ones washed up on the local beaches these have purple rings on them but I have never seen any that large. Like the multi pics. ;D
