I sowed some radishes in a planter and they came up nicely. However, they are not thickening - why is that, please? Must I remove half of them, thin them out?

Yes, thin them out, I aim for a minimum of about an inch all round each plant.
If 3 plants are sharing the same area then each one will only get a third of its requirements.
Each plant must have its share of nutrients, light and space to grow.
You only need to sow a few radishes at a time as once ready for harvesting they deteriorate in a matter of days, so you can place each seed in the final position and no need to thin out later.
All this is only my view, hope that helps!

Thanks DAG. I've thinned them out now but I think that they are beyond help. I'll sow fewer next time.

I love radishes - I have been thinking of growing some too.
