Hope someone can help...my friend is growing a Kiwi on wires on a west facing fence. It's put on loads of growth over the Summer, but now is losing some of it's leaves. Can't say I know anything about them...are they supposed to lose their leaves? Should she put it in the greenhouse? Any suggestions much appreciated

Windy - we used to have one growing on a south-facing wall until last year. They need plenty of sun and warmth, and they loose their leaves in the winter.
We had ours for a good 10 years and it grew and grew, sprouted big, soft, velvety leaves all over - but never produced a single fruit. It was sold to me as a self-pollenating one but it was obviously not. Anyway, after giving it "the last chance" for several years, it was dug out last year and the neighbours had it. They replanted it twice and I think it dead now.
It doesn't have to be brought in for the winter, ours was in the ground. If your friend lives down your way, then perhaps the west-facing fence will be ok in your milder winters.
Oh, my son's fil had a couple growing in his enclosed garden, had proper trunks on them! They had lots of fruit but they were small, not like the big ones you get in the supermarkets, but nice and sweet.
Hope your friend's does well. If it is still young, give it a bit of covering around the bottom the first couple of winters. We used a soft styrophor sheet (spelling?) around ours. If it does freeze back, it should grow again the next year.

Fantastic stuff KG I knew you'd have the answer...thank you soooo much...so it'll lose it's leaves and she should protect its roots with some fleece or something. Brilliant...thank you soooooo much
