First attempt to grow sweet potatoes and probably got off to a late start but here goes, today I transferred them from the temporary container on the right into these large garden bags half filled from the compost heap: I took the removable slats out of bottom shelf of my staging so that the frame could support the bags and hoping there will be enough space for them to grow through.

It will be interesting to see how they progress DAG. I know sweet potatoes make nice crisps but I dont think I have had them any other way.

I'm looking forward to seeing how they turn out Dag, we might try some next year. Robert my cousin does wonderful things with sweet potatoes . Peel them cut into fairly large chunks mix with squash, red onion quarters, new potatoes, carrots, and any other veg you like sprinkle with salt , pepper a pinch of mixed herbs and some ground cumin. Put in a roasting tin with some meat juices mix well and roast . They are lovely with roast pork. I usually just steam them and mash them with loads of butter .

Yes we have tried sweet potatoes most ways and they certainly seem to be as versatile as ordinary potatoes but with a better flavour I think. Only down side is they are dearer, so seems more worthwhile attempting to grow some myself.

They are coming along nicely, DAG, and fingers crossed for a good crop.
The mixed roasted veggie recipe sounds yummy, Ann, it's the kind of thing that we both would love.
Yes, they are more expensive than regular potatoes over here as well, and the reason why I haven't bought any to mash like you told me, DAG. That really went over well with the whole family when I made it over last Christmas.
Speaking of expensive, I've found that even the regular potatoes have risen in price, be they old or new ones. We had some new ones recently, and they tasted like nothing.

Ooh yes, love the sound of your cousin's mix, Ann. Whichever way I do them, normally mix with ordinary as I find them a bit too sweet. New potatoes somehow seem more versatile these days, they always seemed to be just boiled or sauteed but we get lovely chips from them which we could never do before.

White turnips, Ann- are there blue ones I thought there was only one kind of turnip and as we're not keen, very rarely buy. We've only ever had them in casseroles or stews- can they be roasted? David did Clapshot with them once which we liked- had forgotten about that until now. Arney

Yes, you can put turnips in roasted veggies, Arney. My cousin in England does, grows a few in her raised bed as well. Didn't DAG grow some last year or the year before?
Just googled Clapshot, as I'd never heard of it before. The word doesn't sound appetizing but now that I know what it is, I like it. I make something similar now and then with potatoes and either carrots or some kind of beans. In fact, we had it with carrots last week and with beans not so long ago. It is especially good if you put some ginger in the carrot one and some savory in with the beans (this herb goes great with any kind of beans). Also, chop some bacon into bits, fry then sprinkle over this veggie mix, with or without the fat, depending on how you like it.
