Its made of cast iron, but not a vessel for holding liquid or cooking with.

Nope.not a man hole cover and not a piece of machinery. Its rather small and I can hold it in one hand.

Never heard of such a thing Kedi, we always just cut a slit in the top crust for that.

I just looked it up and it is called a Pie Bird, ;D. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pie_birdI've seen them in the shops but we always just slit the top as well. Next guess - a weight of some kind?
