It is at present in the loft and something that belonged to my father although I don't think he used it much. I imagine it would probably have been used more by women in it's time but not necessarily! ;D

No, it is not electric, I think it is probably pre WWII or 1950's at the latest. It is not some obscure object and you will kick yourself when you know what it is!
